Sandoq the Shadow
Fire & BloodSandoq the Shadow is a warrior from Lys whose music and fearsome reputation give way, at Maegor’s Holdfast, to a decisive act of defense. He arrived with Lady Larra Rogare as a gift from her father, Lysandro Rogare, and became the force that stopped Ser Amaury Peake’s men from reaching the king inside the holdfast.
Identity and Reputation
Sandoq was almost seven feet tall, black-haired and dark-skinned, with a face marked by thin white scars. He often concealed it behind a black silk veil. Unable to speak, he was also unable to read or write. His reputation, however, traveled widely: stories claimed he had won a hundred fights in the death pits of Meereen, fought on after his sword broke, and killed dangerous animals with stones. The account cautions that such stories grow in the telling and that their truth cannot be established. They frame Sandoq as a figure of rumor, but the defense of Maegor’s Holdfast shows his skill in action rather than relying on legend.
Music and Lady Larra
Mushroom describes a quieter side of Sandoq. Though he could not read or write, he played a tall stringed instrument made of goldenheart and ebony, sitting in the shadows of Lady Larra’s bedchamber. His playing could move her to tears, even though she understood only a few words of the common tongue. Mushroom also recalled that he could sometimes make her laugh. The contrast matters: the man later known for the sounds of battle was also a musician whose playing shaped the emotional life he shared with Lady Larra.
The Defense of Maegor’s Holdfast
When Ser Amaury Peake ordered his guards to move Prince Viserys and the king aside, Sandoq stepped onto the drawbridge. His weapons were a tall black shield made of nightwood, boiled hide, and iron, and a curved sword with a dragonbone hilt and a blade of Valyrian steel. He met Peake’s guards as they advanced, turning aside their attacks with his shield and driving some backward from the bridge. The account of the battle comes through Mushroom, who said he watched from the roof above; it portrays Sandoq moving silently and with such control that the fight resembled a harvest more than a conventional swordfight.
Peake fought on despite losing men, and for a brief moment his last remaining guard seized Sandoq’s sword before falling from the bridge. Sandoq then took Prince Viserys’s battleaxe from the wood where the prince had lodged it and defeated Peake, who had charged while Sandoq was unarmed. He pushed the dead and dying from the drawbridge, then withdrew into the holdfast. The king ordered the bridge raised, the portcullis lowered, and the gates barred. Sandoq’s intervention had secured the castle-within-a-castle, which remained closed for eighteen days while Ser Marston Waters held the rest of the Red Keep and Ser Lucas Leygood controlled King’s Landing.
